ACT阅读每日一个长难句分析（一）

　　ACT阅读部分一共40题，考试时间为35分钟，题材主要分为小说(prose fiction)、社会科学(social sciences)、人文(humanities)、自然科学(natural sciences)四种题材。ACT阅读长难句导致很多学生看不懂文章，可以说长难句是考生取得高分的拦路虎。

　　阅读长难句分析

　　句子背景：讲2019年苹果的春季新品发布会。it指代的就是这场发布会。里面有个对仗句式，as theatre, it…; as a business case, it…

　　先来看theatre这个词，这里用作了不可数名词（没加a），显然不能理解成“剧院”了。它表示the entertainment that involves the performance of plays，演出、表演。如，从事戏剧工作，work in theatre；戏剧人，a man of the theatre。As theatre，可以翻译成：作为一次演出；作为一场表演秀。跟后面的As a business case作为一个商业案例，对应。

　　underwhelming很容易让我们联想到overwhelming（压倒性的、无法抗拒的）。我们常用the overwhelming majority of来表示绝大多数。overwhelming也常可形容人或事物的受欢迎程度。underwhelming与overwhelming构成反义，表示not impressing or exciting you at all反响平平，不怎么受热捧。

　　star-studded指明星荟萃的，众星云集的。a star-studded cast明星荟萃的演出阵容，或者也可以表达成an all-star cast。中间加了supporting说明这个演员阵容是配角演员，苹果发布会的主角当然是苹果公司啦，明星只是作为配角出现，为其站台。关于cast，还可说the whole cast全体演员；members of the cast剧组成员；a cast list演员表。

　　notwithstanding一般用于其所指名词前后，表示虽然、尽管。including Oprah Winfrey notwithstanding就是指尽管有奥普拉·温弗瑞这样的明星给发布会站台，it was still underwhelming依然反响平平。但是，作为一个商业案例，it looks more compelling。似乎更引人注意、吸引人。compelling对应的就是前面的underwhelming，意思相反，我们也可以说成appealing。
