  Listening:

  Response:

In the reading, the university is going to hire some paid student technicians to help students solve computer problems. These technicians have to live in the dorm in order to serve the students anytime they need. As a return, their living expenses will be cut in half. The girl in the conversation thinks this is a good idea. One time, her computer was freeze when she did her homework late at night. She had to carry a bunch of books to the library to use the computer. The next day, her friend told her that it was a simple problem, which can be solved in a minute. She thinks it will be great if there are some student technicians who can help her. Second, for the living expense, it is nice to cut it in half because the living fee is too high. She wants to apply for this position.

  Task 3

  Listening:

  1. 认为有学生会把书锁起来,其他人就用不了;

  Response:

The university has announced that the school library is planning to install locks for students in order to provide them with convenience. In addition, students will be charged for the use of these locks to cover the expenses of the installment. The speaker does not agree with the announcement. There are two reasons. First of all, once after the installment, some students will lock the books they want to use for private use, and that is unfair to other students who are in urgent need of these books. Secondly, students have a tight budget and there is no extra money to spare. Therefore, few students will choose to pay to use the locks and it has lost the original meaning of the installment.

  Response:

In the reading passage, the university decided to increase the number of students in each class from 8 to 15. That’s because there are more students applying for these classes while the number of faculties is limited. In the listening, the male student disagrees with this decision. First, it will decrease the opportunity to communicate with the faculty, leading to less participation. Second, if more students are coming, more tuition will be paid. The university can use this to pay for having more faculties. In this way, the problem of faculty insufficiency will be solved.

  Task 4

  Reading: functional attribute error,

  Listening:

  Response:

Functional attribute error describes a psychological phenomenon that people tend to ignore the details seemingly irrelevant to them. The professor talked about his own experience as an example. Once he was later for a meeting where his supervisor also attended. After he arrived, he apologized to the supervisor for his lateness. Later, he had to propose to his supervisor about a question. In fact, the supervisor had explained the question before he arrived, but the professor had no idea of this. However, the supervisor apparently had forgot the professor’s lateness and was angry that he had asked the question having been explained ahead of time.

  Reading:

  Listening:

  Response:

Human commensalism refers to a biological phenomenon that animals are able to adapt to the environment with the existence of human and advantage of human activities at the same time. The professor mentioned two examples of birds. The first kind of birds isdove, and this kind lives in the campus buildings instead of nests built by natural materials. They can save a lot of energy by doing so. Also, it’s safe to raise their kids over there. Another kind is also about doves. This group of doves dines around the campus garbage. They consume the easy food, which is the human food remains in order to get enough nutrition. Furthermore, students on campus feed them with meat and vegetables from time to time.

  Task 4

Listening: 在图书馆做一个关于学生们是否会小声交谈的试验,第一次问:will you speak in the library;有的说他们说很awkward,第二次问: What do you think others will response?

  Response:

False consensus refers to a psychological phenomenon that people tend to believe that they are right or at least stand by the most common idea. The professor gives an experiment. The participants were questioned about their behaviors in the library. For example, whether they will speak, sit or stand in the library. Some think it is awkward to speak in the library. But at the second time, the participants were asked whether they believed that others would hold the same opinion as they did. This time, however, most people did not think others would hold the same opinion as they did.

  Task 5

  Solutions

  Response:

The man has faced a problem that he doesn't have his biology textbook because he registered too late for the course, but the professor left a lot of reading assignment. There are two possible solutions. First, he can order from the bookstore. Second, he can buy a used book from a student who had taken this course at a lower price. I would recommend him to choose the second one. To begin with, it will take a week for the book to get to the bookstore, so it’ll be too late since he has to do the reading assignment this week. Secondly, getting a used book is cheaper. Also, the notes or marks in the books are the key points of the book, which can be helpful for him.

  Task 5

  Solution 1:

  Solution 2:

  Response:

In the conversation, the student editors of the campus newspaper have encountered a problem that the university has cut their funding off and the price of papers has raised by 25%. There are two solutions for them. First is to cut the international and national news section. Second, they can reduce the publishing copies. I would recommend them to take the second option. I think most of the students are willing to share with others. It is more important to keep the variety and range of the content of newspapers with national and international parts in.

  Solutions

  Response:

The male in the conversation has encountered a problem that his electrical keyboard was destroyed in a storm, but there will be a concert performance next week. There are two options. One is to buy a used keyboard. Second, he can cancel his trip with his friends and use the money saved up for this trip to buy a new one. Personally speaking, I recommend him to take the former solution. A used keyboard doesn't necessarily have poor quality. He can carefully pick one to make sure it has a high quality. By doing this, he will be able to make the performance and go to the trip with his friends.

  Task 6

  20131122

  1 不走直线,速度不定,会变速,走 zigzag pattern,于是 predator 无法 anticipate 它的行为,就不好抓到它;

  Response:

Preys’ behaviours can be easily predicted by predators. The professor mentions that some preys have certain mechanism to confuse predators so that they can escape successfully. The professor gives an example of squid. Firstly, they don’t move in a line and they always change their speed. They often move in a zigzag pattern so predators can’t anticipate their next move, thus missing the target. Moreover, squids can change colours. For instance, predators have stared at the pink squid for a long time, but it suddenly changed its colour into blue. Then the predators will be confused immediately, which will give squid a chance to escape.

  Task6

  Listening:

  Response:

As stated in the lecture, being pessimistic sometimes is beneficial. Two advantages are mentioned by the professor. First, people being pessimistic are used to prepare beforehand. For instance, if the person is pessimistic about the weather, thinking that it may be raining the next day, so the person will bring an umbrella or rain coat with him. Second, people being pessimistic tend not to get too disappointed when something bad happens since they already foresee the bad result that may take place. For example, if an individual is looking for a job and he is pessimistic about it. When he cannot find a good one, he will not be too depressed.

  18

  Response:

The lecture explains two ways poorly designed logos can cause damage to a company. The lecturer gives two examples. The first example is a logo of a toothpaste company. This logo appears dark and muddy, which contradicts consumers’ expectation of toothpaste to make their teeth white and bright. The company’s logo will therefore inhibit consumers’ desire to purchase their toothpaste. The second example is a logo of a telecom company. The company uses an old-fashioned telephone picture as their logo, but the company provides modern communication service such as Internet service. So the logo is a bad representation of the company’s business and consumers will not consider purchasing products or service from this company.
