PTE英语必考考点，when和while区别

　　when

　　什么时候，何时；什么情况下，什么场合下；(用于时间的表达方式之后)在那时；其时；当时（副词）

　　什么时候，何时（代词）

　　在…时候，当…时，在…期间，在…之后；在任何…时候（连词）

　　I had an active social life when I was at college.

　　我在大学时社交生活丰富。

　　Steve was in a particularly bad mood when he got back.

　　史蒂夫回来时心情特别不好。

　　When will he be back from his holiday?

　　他度假什么时候回来？

　　I mind the time when we were in Beijing together.

　　我想起我们一起在北京的时光。

　　02while

　　（while要特别注意学习不同的用法）

　　在…期间，当…的时候；与…同时（连词）

　　虽然，尽管（连词）

　　(对比两件事物)…而，…然而（连词）

　　一段时间；一会儿（名词）

　　Flats in the downtown are expensive, while houses in the suburbs are cheap.

　　市中心的公寓很贵，而郊区的房子很便宜。

　　While I sympathize, I can't really do very much to help.

　　虽然我很同情，但我实在帮不了什么忙。

　　Did you sneak into my room while I was asleep?

　　我睡着的时候你偷偷溜进我的房间了吗？

　　The band played the guitar while we danced.

　　我们跳舞时乐队弹起了吉他。

　　While I was waiting at the bus stop, three buses went by in the opposite direction.

　　当我在公共汽车站等车时，有三辆公共汽车朝相反的方向经过。

　　I want to rest a while.

　　我想休息一会儿。

　　After a while, we naturally started talking about the children.

　　过了一会儿，我们自然而然地开始谈论孩子们。

　　They chattered away happily for a while.

　　03while和when的区别

　　while和when在表示“当…的时候”时，有些同学会觉得难以区分，但这又是常考的语言点，很是让人苦恼。

　　其实，要掌握它们的不同用法，先要了解动词的一个特征：短暂性动词还是延续性动词：

　　while从句的谓语必须是延续性的；when从句谓语短暂性和延续性都可以。

　　It was midnight when we left the party.

　　我们离开晚会时已是午夜。

　　It's rude to speak when you're eating.

　　吃饭的时候说话是不礼貌的。

　　Please keep the doors closed while the train is moving.

　　火车开动时请别开车门。

　　考试考它们的区别，只可能两种情况：

　　1）只能用when（从句谓语短暂性）：

　　I'll believe that when it happens.

　　当事情发生了我才会相信。

　　Turn off the lights when you leave.

　　离开时把灯关掉。

　　2）只用while（主句和从句都是进行时）：

　　While I'm doing my homework, my mother is preparing dinner.

　　当我做作业时，我妈妈正在准备晚饭。

　　It was raining hard while I was driving toward the town.

　　谓语是延续性的，while和when可以互换，是没法考的。

　　04while和whilst

　　while和whilst这两个词先有哪个？很多人会以为是whilst吧？

　　无其实while在古英语中就在使用了；而whilst是一个中古英语词汇。

　　作为连词，在英式英语里它们是可以互换的，但美国英语没有保留whilst。

　　He broke his hip whilst hunting.

　　他打猎时摔伤了臀部。

　　Breakfast is continental, whilst dinner is three courses from a set menu.

　　早餐是欧式的，晚餐是三道菜的套餐。
