Nowadays, there are many celebrities who are famous for their glamour and wealth rather than achievements. This is a bad example for young people. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

These days, celebrities are making headlines more for their glamour and their fortune than their professional accomplishments, which in some people’s opinion, sets unsuitable role models for the young generation. I personally agree with their perspective.

The adverse influences of this worldwide trend penetrate into young people’s daily life as well as their mindset. When celebrities are only noted for being rich and attractive, children and young adults who adore them are likely to form an extravagant lifestyle, because they sometimes follow their role models blindly. In their quest to live like idols, youngsters often imitate the flashy lifestyles – fast cars, expensive jewelry and designer clothes. On a deeper level, this fascination with appearance and wealth sends out a misleading message to today’s young generation, promoting the idea that hard work and perseverance are less significant, and that success can be achieved easily.

Some would argue that it is not entirely a bad thing when celebrities are known for their material possessions and glamourous images, because it means that the barrier to fame has been lowered. In this case, young people seem to find success more attainable than it used to be. However, today’s celebrity culture teaches the youth that being a successful person is about little more than having an eye-catching profile. It teaches them to cut corners in order to achieve fame, and to boast about it once they have succeeded. In light of this, they only see the superficial side of fame and possibly do not understand or appreciate the efforts that make one successful.

To sum up, young individuals can be negatively influenced by vacuous celebrities whose fame is predicated upon very little achievement but image and fortune, since they deliver a set of value that would deteriorate the young generation.
