　　Someearly societies ceased to consider certain rites(仪式) essential to their well-being and abandoned them, nevertheless, they retained as parts of their oral tradition the myths that had grown up around the rites and admired them for their artistic qualities rather than for their religious usefulness.

　　这句话对不少学生来说都是一个长难句，但是只要查懂了单词，困扰学生们的一个最大的难点，就落在了对于“they retained as parts of their oral tradition the myths that had grown up around the rites”这个部分的理解。

　　错误的理解：

　　很多同学这句话读不懂，就强行将其翻译为“他们保留了部分口头传统的神话围绕着仪式成长起来”，这种中文是让人无法理解的，只是机械的翻译出了单词而已。

　　正确的理解：

　　这句话里出现了宾语后置这种语法现象。正常的语序应该是“They retained the myths that had grown uparound the rites as parts of their oral tradition.”其中They是主语，retained是谓语，the myths that had grown up around the rites整体做宾语，as parts of their oral tradition是宾语补足语，简称宾补。

总体结构是：retain A as B(把A保留为B)。因为宾语里加了定语从句的缘故，宾语要比宾补长，所以为了避免这个句子出现头重脚轻的情况，地道的英文文章，就会把宾语放到宾补后面，导致中国学生看不懂。

　　翻译：

　　一些早期社会不再认为特定的仪式对他们的福利是至关重要的，因此抛弃了它们，但是，他们却把从这些仪式当中出现的神话故事以口头传统的形式保留了下来，并且人们是因为艺术价值而钦佩这些神话而不是因为它们在宗教意义上有用。
