　　AEIS词汇讲解:

　　本句是由but连接的并列句。第一个分句的主干是throats, noses and aches spell misery。第二个分句的主干是being able to tell may make adifference，其中if the cause is a cold or flu为tell的宾语从句，how long the misery lasts为介词in的宾语从句。

　　scratc by的意思是“发出沙沙声的”，此处的意思是“沙哑的”;stuffy的意思是“不通畅的”。make a difference的意思是“有影响”。

　　spell此处的意思是“招致，意味着”。如:

　　Such a scandal may spell disaster for the whole family.这样的丑闻可能给整个家族带来灾难。
