　　阐述

　　expound

　　及物动词

　　to set forth or state in detail用细节论述

　　例句：Professor Turner will expound the significance of the frontier in American history.特纳教授会具体讲解边疆地区在美国历史上的意义。

　　用法类似explain, interpret,这两个词本篇不做赘述

　　setforth

　　及物动词

　　to give an account of; state; describe 陈述，描述

　　例句：He set forth his theory in a scholarly report.他在一篇学术报告中论述了他的理论。

　　spell out

　　及物动词

　　to explain something explicitly, so that the meaning is unmistakable 非常详细、清楚地解释出来，以防误解

　　例句：Must I spell it out for you?一定要我一五一十地解释清楚吗？

　　bring home

　　及物动词

　　toget to the heart of a matter, make perfectly clear 清楚说明；使人深刻认识到。

　　例句：The crash brought home the danger of drinking and driving.车祸残酷证明了酒后驾车的危险。

　　elaborate

　　及物/不及物动词

　　to add details to; expand 详细阐述

　　例句：Theauthor further elaborates his proposal with detailed calculation.作者进一步用详细的计算来阐述他的提议。

　　elucidate

　　及物/不及物动词

　　to explain something that is difficult to understand by providing more information 通过给出更多的信息来解释、论述清楚难以理解的事情。

　　例句：Hereafter I hope to elucidate at length these phenomena of expression.今后我希望可以详细解释这些表达方面的现象。

　　explicate

　　及物动词

　　to make plain or clear; to develop (a principle, theory, etc.) 详细阐述

　　例句：We shall have to explicate its basic assumptions before we can assess its implication.在我们能评估其含义以前，我们得先解释其基本假设。

　　delineate

　　及物动词

　　to portray in words; describe or outline with precision:精确地用语言描述、阐述，详细解释。

　　例句：In her speech she delineated the city plan with great care.在她的演讲中，她审慎地解释了城市的规划。

　　illuminate

　　to make something much clearer and easier to understand 阐明，解释〔某事物〕；使易懂

　　例句：The report illuminates the difficult issues at the heart of science policy.报告阐明了科学方针核心部分的难点。

　　表现

　　manifest

　　及物动词

　　1. to make clear or evident to the eye or the understanding; show plainly通过可以看得到的形式来表现某种特质或感情。可以指“显得…”。

　　例句：He was besides too proud to manifest his interest in the special contents of this letter.除此之外，他过高的自尊心让他不愿意表露出对这封信的内容感兴趣。

　　2. to prove; put beyond doubt or question 确凿证明；展现出。

　　例句：The evidence manifests the guilt of the defendant.证据表明被告有罪。

　　除此以外，manifest也可以做形容词，表示“明显的”。

　　类似的用法，相当于show,display, exhibit,这四个词本篇不做赘述。大家替换着用。

　　demonstrate

　　及物动词

　　to describe, explain, or illustrate by examples, specimens, experiments, or the like: 通过事例、实验、标本等来展现。

　　例句：The teacher demonstrates the force of gravity by dropping an object.老师用掉落物体来展现重力。

　　用法类似manifest，illustrate,exemplify。

　　evince

　　及物动词

　　to reveal the possession of (a quality, trait, etc.) 表现出主体具有某种特质或情感。注意，这种表现是对于主体自身的某种表现。

　　例句：The statistics of this paragraph evinces authenticity and respect for fact.这里的authenticity和respect是主语statistics本身具有的特质。

　　注意evince不要与evoke搞混，后者指引起某种情感或回忆，主语与宾语之间具有因果联系，譬如“这篇文章唤起了大家被SAT写作所支配的恐惧”；而前者只有印证、表现的作用，不具备主语与宾语之间的因果联系。

　　evidence

　　1. 同manifest (1), 表现出…。

　　例句：He evidenced his approval by promising his full support.他用全力支持来展现自己的认可。

　　2. to support by evidence 用证据来支持

　　例句：He evidenced his accusation with incriminating letters.以信件为罪证，他证明了他的指控。

　　The volcano is still active, as evidenced by the recent eruption.最近的喷发证明，这座火山依然活跃。

　　substantiate

　　及物动词

　　to establish by proof or competent evidence 用有力的证据来证明

　　例句：And yet something there would surely be by which I could substantiate my story.然而我一定有能够证明我的故事的证据。

　　用法同evidence和establish。

　　expose

　　及物动词

　　1. to make known, disclose, unmask, or reveal (intentions, secrets, etc.) 揭露被隐藏的秘密或动机

　　例句：He praised Snowden for having the bravery to expose the crimes of the NSA.他称赞斯诺登有揭露美国国家安全局罪行的勇气。

　　用法类似disclose.

　　2. If someone is exposed to an idea or feeling, usually a new one, they are given experience of it, or introduced to it. 使体验 (观念、情感); 引入 (观念、情感)

　　例句：The historical events enumerated by the author expose readers to accusation against foreign looters.作者列举的历史事件引起读者们对外国掠夺者们的谴责。

　　indicate

　　及物动词

　　to state or express, especially briefly or in a general way; signal 表明某物的存在或某种观点的正确性

　　例句：He indicated his disapproval but did not go into detail.他表明了自己的反对，但是并没有细说。

　　与show同义。

　　authenticate

　　及物动词

　　to prove that something is true or real 证明某事为真

　　例句：Her mission was to authenticate every fact.她的任务是证明每件事实的真实性

　　The number, “6% a year”, authenticates the encroachment of natural darkness by artificial light.数字“每年6%”证明了夜晚的黑暗被人造灯光所蚕食的事实。
