　　The Union Flag results from the combination of three national flags.

　　「Union Flag」即「national flag of the United Kingdom」，乃是对英国国旗的称呼。其中的「Union」一词，原意为「联盟」，在此表示联合王国，全称叫做「大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国」。

　　联合王国国旗由三面国旗组合而成。

　　先看第一面：

　　The first is the flag of St George of England, a red cross on a white background, first adopted by the Crusader King Richard I (reigned 1189-99).

　　「St George」即「Saint George」的简写，「圣乔治」，基督教的殉道圣人，在英格兰被尊为守护圣者。以圣乔治命名的「Saint George's Cross」，「圣乔治十字旗」，是英格兰的国旗。

　　「crusade」是历史上著名的十字军东征。「Crusader」则是在「crusade」后面加上表示人的后缀「er」，指参与十字军东征的人。

　　「Richard I」是「理查一世」，十字军东征时期英格兰国王，也是杰出的东征将领。

　　「superimpose」指「to put one image on top of another so that both can be seen」，也就是让图片「重叠」。

　　「James I andVI」是「詹姆斯一世及六世」，但大家可别以为这是两位国王，其实就是同一个人。这位国王同时是英格兰和苏格兰的君主，在英格兰他是第一个姓詹姆斯的国王，人称「詹姆斯一世」；但在苏格兰他却叫「詹姆斯六世」。分不清楚也没关系，只要记得詹姆斯一世和六世指的是同一个人就够了。

　　「diagonal」词典上给出的解释是：「a diagonal line is straight and joins two opposite corners of a flat shape, usually a squar」，即「对角的」。我们常说的「对角线」就叫做「diagonal line」。而「diagonal cross」即对角交叉线，其实就是一把叉的形状，「×」。

　　「saltire」就是专门给对角十字取的名字，即「a cross with diagonal bars of equal length」。也就是说，「diagonal cross」跟「saltire」是同义词，所以原文才打了个括号表示。

　　「St Andrew」跟前面的圣乔治是同一个套路，中文叫做「圣安德鲁」。圣安德鲁是天主教名声响当当的人物，苏格兰的守护神。因此，苏格兰国旗也被叫做「圣安德鲁十字旗」。

　　圣乔治十字旗跟圣安德鲁十字旗叠加之后，成了这样一枚旗帜：

　　是不是非常眼熟？其实已经能找到现在联合王国国旗的雏形了。从图片上标出的年份可以看出，1606-1801年间，这面旗帜就是当成大不列颠王国的国旗使用的。但在1801年，又往上面加了第三面旗帜：

　　Finally, following the Act of Union of 1800 which created "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland", St Patrick's flag — a red saltire on a white background — was added to give the present Union Flag.

　　「Act of Union of 1800」即「1800年联合法令」。原本的大不列颠王国只有英格兰和苏格兰两部分，在此次法令后，大不列颠王国与爱尔兰王国联合成立了「大不列颠和爱尔兰联合王国」，也就是原文中的「The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland」。

　　既然圣乔治和圣安德鲁都是「圣」字辈的，爱尔兰国旗当然也有个类似的名字了，就叫「St Patrick」，即「圣帕特里克」，旗面呈白底红色斜十字：

　　大家可能要好奇了，英国明明由英格兰、苏格兰、爱尔兰跟威尔士四部分组成，其他三个地方的国旗都有了，为什么单单缺了威尔士？

　　Wales was excluded from the party on the grounds that it was a principality, not a kingdom.

　　「principality」即「a country ruled by a prince」，它不是由国王统治，而是类似于分封给亲王的土地，在中文里可以翻译为「侯国」，或者「公国」。

　　「on the grounds」表示「基于」，或者理解为「由于……的原因」。

　　威尔士被排除在外，因为它是侯国而非王国。

　　英国国旗呢，还有一个外号，叫做「Union Jack」：

　　The expression Union Jack, by which the flag is often known, dates from the practice in the Royal Navy of hanging the Union flag from the jackstaff, a vertical pole sited on a ship's bow.

　　其实就是因为英国皇家海军把旗帜竖在船头的「jackstaff」上面，在中文里这个单词可以理解为「船首旗杆」。
