　　Damage to the global environment is increasing at an alarming rate. Some people argue that government officials should be mainly held accountable for environmental protection, since little can be done by ordinary people. However, I believe although politicians do have a crucial role to play in addressing this problem, individual contributions are by no means negligible.

　　The fundamental part of governments in mitigating environmental damage is effective policy implementation on both domestic and international levels. By enacting laws and measures regarding global environmental issues, such as emission control, waste treatment practices, and sanctuaries for endangered species, policy makers are able to take concrete actions to realize sustainable development, because these policies act as guidelines for individuals and private sectors in their daily activities. Besides, it is politicians who can make sure sufficient funding is allocated in that regard, in order to support and sustain environment actions which have strong reliance on continuous investment. In essence, politicians can make a difference on a much bigger picture than individuals.

　　However, government policies and spending ultimately rely on public support, without which all efforts would be in vain. A convincing evidence is that similar environmental policies often have various outcomes in different countries, largely due to the level of public participation. When people have greater environmental awareness, they would be more willing to comply with relevant laws and regulations. Another responsibility of Individuals lies with everyday actions to protect the environment. For instance, recycling and reuse help to cut down waste; transport conservation assists in reducing greenhouse gas emissions; economizing energy use in daily life contributes to reducing excessive exploitation of natural resources.

　　In conclusion, I assert politicians have indisputable responsibility for reducing damage to the environment, but this does not mean that individual efforts are insignificant, since the general public can join hands with the government. Lack of individual participation could mean that addressing environmental issues is beyond reach.
